I was reading something earlier today and this quote caught my eye.
“It is not the employer who pays the wages. He only handles the money. It is the product that pays the wages.” Henry Ford
This particular quote is actually also quoted as “It is the customer that pays the wages.”
It seems simplistic even generic but there is a big deal of truth in it.
And so if you work in the service or the hospitality industry, or if you work retail, maybe as a customer service person, if you work the front desk, if you answer incoming customer calls, if you work as a cashier, a receptionist, or if you are a salesperson or something like that and then you treat your customers like crap, then eventually you will get what you deserve, crappy wages.
So, if you work directly with your customers, see them face-to-face or talk to them on the phone, through fax messages or emails, treat them nicely and remember, they pay your wages.
And be aware that they are giving you the favor by giving you business because they could have brought their hard-earned money to your competitor. Treat them nicely so that they will have a good time and that would come back, again and again and again.
And one more thing to keep in mind, the more customers you have or the more work you have to do, the more money to pay you.
The less customers, and your company would probably not need your position filled and they would eventually fire you out sooner if not later.
So, if you work customer service, serve the customer! Otherwise go find another career!
And if your company isn’t paying you enough for the job you do? Then go find another company that will, for if you do your job well, other companies will go after you.
